︎DESIGN BRIEF

2nd & Klein transforms an existing industrial site into a neighborhood entertainment district. The central feature is a large interior courtyard to be used for family games, gatherings, and movie nights. Hidden mid-block along the West façade of the development lies a thin service alley acting as the primary pedestrian route between the new development and the neighborhood it serves. Here we envisioned a moment of celebration through the design of a neighborhood gateway.

Program concerns included the need for additional lighting, an accessible passageway for neighborhood clientele, and a non-disruptive form of signage against the neighborhood face. There were also strict dimensional parameters (40’-1”Lx9’-10”Wx13’-6”H), multiple existing conditions, and a modest budget that had to be accounted for. The gateway addresses each of these concerns while adding a hidden gem of transformative pedestrian experience.

Constructed of four identical cuboid panel systems the gateway lines the walls and lid of the alley space. Two thousand fifty-two three-quarter inch holes are drilled in three layers of steel angles and a central control plate on every panel. Two and one-half miles of UV coated polypropylene rope is woven into all three layers of the frame. Alternating manufacturers colors in the three-tiered panels the moiré is complete and a gradient of flaming color ignites the pedestrian route. The weave pattern accounts for future maintenance and neatly hides all end knots producing the illusion of a singular strand. Through a modest system, a layered, parametric skin now lines all surfaces of our
neighborhood gateway.
